How else could you explain normal human fighters standing upright after being knocked down by Astaroth’s giant axe, or mashed up by Voldo’s katars? Even after being “decapitated” by Yoshimitsu’s critical execution style finish, Soulcalibur’s fighters keep their heads intact. Magic therefore explains the inherent survivability of the entire Soulcalibur roster. The point remains: several, if not all, of the Soulicalibur roster have magical talents. Not to mention Algol, who is literally a god. Ivy’s magic-infused weapon can be controlled with Jedi-esque finesse, its various segments whirling and flying through opponents in a way that would sow fear into Vader’s heart (and a four-inch heel into his lower back). Hair Soul Calibur 4 critical finishing illustrates how deeply ingrained magic is in her weapon, the serpent sword known as Valentine, which splits, reshapes and can be fired telekinetically like a projectile.

Series mainstay Ivy is also magically powered. In other words, Zasalamel has the power to kick Yoda’s ass. Later games gave Zasalamel the ability to stop the flow of time mid-battle, summon tangible ghosts and telekinetically knock his opponent to the ground, forces that rival his Jedi opponents. Zasalamel’s critical finishing move, a spectacular technique that debuted in Soul Calibur 4, sees the spellcaster opening a portal to another dimension and telekinetically throwing his opponent into the void. He is nearly immortal and has powers that surpass Darth Vader and Yoda. The character Zasalamel, introduced in Soul Calibur 3 and playable in 4, is a heavy magic user.

Star Wars is also a movie series about space wizards intended for children. This is a franchise about a magical demonic sword, the Soul Edge, not just humans, golems and lizard people smashing each other with swords, axes and nunchaku. Magic is an important element of the Soulcalibur universe. Questions about imbalance are often brushed aside by hand with one word: magic. Similarly, NetherRealm’s DC fighting games put Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and Sub-Zero on an equal footing.

Capcom games assume that Street Fighter’s Ryu or Resident Evil’s Jill Valentine are an equal match for Marvel’s ancient demon Shuma-Gorath or Infinity Gems wielder Thanos. Pretty much the entire roster of Soul Calibur 4 could defeat Yoda in combat, not having a single midi-chlorian among them.įighting games are all about balance, but also about level playing fields. When Star Wars’ Yoda and Darth Vader were revealed as the guest character fighters for fighting games Soul Calibur 4 at the beginning of 2008 the reactions went in two directions: one, this is so wizard† And, two, is a man with an ax or a lady with a sword really viable against someone with Force powers and a damn lightsaber† Wouldn’t Darth Vader immediately force the entire Soulcalibur cast into submission? And wouldn’t the amputating/cauterizing powers of Yoda’s little lightsaber just cut through literally everyone? and their metal weapons?Įven mainstream gaming sites were concerned: “Does Star Wars Ruin Soulcalibur?” referring in part to the perceived imbalance between Jedi, Sith and the selection of Soul Calibur 4† But many Star Wars fans underestimate the raw power of the Soulcalibur cast in 2008.
